this page sorta... struck me somehow i guess.
sugar seems kinda ansty about the packaging, and considering that maybe, from what i've gathered, that the end of the week is closing in that she just wants to get the the canyon asap or the facade would be up, hence 'i just want it to be over'. it could also be the scopophobia that's linked to the paranoia, though i'm not sure.
lola also didn't seem like they really.. took much of what sugar was saying in, how they assumed sugar was still high or just wanted something else, although they have kinda just woken up so i can't blame them too much. they do seem somewhat guilty in the last few panels too (i think, hopefully i'm reading the expressions correctly).
i don't know, maybe i'm reading too much into it but that's just my thoughts.

I'm a little concerned that we've seen Sugar eat several times but we've never seen Lola eat ( before they left). I understand that eating and being an obligate carnivore is a part of Sugar's character, but I still get worried. Can we assume that Lola has been eating throughout the trip? I'm p sure if she didn't it would'be been brought up sometime but I just wanna make sure.
Nobody 9th Feb 2017, 11:10 PM edit delete reply
heya. i've actually had this pointed out several times, so hopefully explaining will help.

yes, lola eats. she eats quickly-- something i'd decided early on for her as a habit that formed from often not having food available. meanwhile, sugar eats slowly (for a variety of reasons), so i can show either lola eating, or sugar eating, and i chose sugar for the most food-oriented scene.
lola is scripted to eat on screen at the beginning of the next scene (and the last breather page of the story). it seemed appropriate after a scene culminating in the food themes with sugar while i was writing it.
sugar has only eaten once on screen.

more importantly: i have an eating disorder-- specifically, anorexia, the one where you don't eat at all.
i've struggled with it for about 6 years, and i've been trying to recover from it for about 2 years now, with a lot of relapses. the act of eating as a concept is still anxiety-inducing to me, and spending 6+ hours per panel can be pretty stressful when the subject matter is already hard for me to deal with.
so in general i will avoid drawing characters eating unless i feel it's necessary for the story.
i know there's a lot of issues around not showing women casually eating and enjoying food in media, but the general forces causing that problem have already affected my mental and physical health a lot, so it's where i have to throw in the towel and say i'm a flawed person making a story to the best of my ability.

hope that clears it up.

It looks like the panel of Sugar lifting her hair out of her blue eye is like, a visual metaphor for the door of that train of thought which is a really neat visual cue.

Lola looking at her hand and at Sugar simultaneously with her eye pairs in the last two panels is a really nice detail i feel like, i feel the last two panels really have this mood to it like when it feels like the world is getting quieter while heavy emotions sink in.

I love how Sugar repetitively catches herself grabbing Lola's arm and tries not to, even though she wants to. She knows to respect Lola's boundaries even when she can hardly control her impulses.
mata 10th Feb 2017, 2:27 PM edit delete reply
Whoa, I actually didn't know exactly what Lola was doing until I thought about it a bit. At first I thought she was just flirting, but now I'm thinking about what you said about her being a Snail Fur and how they can regenerate super quickly. Was Lola offering Sugar.. one of her fingers? or blood, or something?

And somehow Lola looks kind of offended that Sugar didn't want it. I find it really interesting and can't wait to see where this conversation goes.
Guest 10th Feb 2017, 3:42 PM edit delete reply
I dunno, I kinda interpreted that as, Lola was making a joke, but Sugar honestly considered taking a bite out of her for a minute there.

And Lola realized that and is just sitting there in silent contemplation like, "Whoa."

I don't know if I'm supposed to be reading into it as, "This is Sugar's potential schizophrenia being... potential schizophrenia," but that's how I took it. Especially after the bits regarding the jerky bag.

Even with regenerative abilities, I would imagine getting part of your body chomped off still hurts like fuck and I don't think Lola would legitimately offer that up.
Joshua 11th Feb 2017, 5:38 AM edit delete reply
Yeah actually I think they were. In some really old drawings posted on Grey's blog a while back it was canon that Sugar would lob off parts of Lola's body and eat them.
Nobody 11th Feb 2017, 1:02 PM edit delete reply
mata, you're right about offering sugar a part of herself (not necessarily being offended by being turned down). lola has scars on her body from this at the beginning of the comic.

it does hurt like fuck, but that's the point, for lola.

side note: please don't link my blog on this site. TwT

ohhh i was wondering about those scars. Thanks for clearing that up!!

As I went back to look at the first panel it struck me how much the art has changed since then. The characters actually look more... real, and grown up, like somehow over the past week that this comic takes place in, they've matured and changed. Everything about this comic is amazing.
Bowsmed 29th Apr 2017, 11:32 AM edit delete reply
Ooooh, I was curious about Lola's scars at the beginning of the comic, not sure if you saw the question, I haven't looked back in a while. Glad there's a proper explanation, I thought Lola's been abused or something.
Guest 10th Feb 2017, 7:39 PM edit delete reply
I don't think lola is upset that sugar seriously was considering it? I think they're disappointed to be turned down.
Anonymous 12th Feb 2017, 6:33 PM edit delete reply
i love the comic, but i worry these two aren't really right for eachother. the art is always beautiful, and the writings great. i have fun trying to pick out lolas expression.

I agree in that, in my personal opinion, I don't know if their relationship is good for either of them. However, with that said, real relationships aren't exactly about being 100% "right" for one another. The support that they give one another, despite differences or flaws, is what make their relationship realistic.

I also believe being "right" for one another is hard to determine - who, as a person, would be right for someone like Lola? Who do you think would be a better fit for Sugar? What is it that would make you believe they aren't a good match? (This sounds accusatory but I mean it honestly, I swear!)

And it must be said that regardless of outsider perspectives, the reasons people get together should be about what they both get out of it. Though we're speaking in terms of fictional characters so it feels a little silly to say that, lol.
Anonymous 15th Feb 2017, 3:49 AM edit delete reply
no worries, you're not being accusatory mate. sometimes it can be hard to express emotions through the internet, it's all good B). also i apologize if this is all over the place - i was just zoning out + it's really hot today.

you're right - no one's really 100% for ecahother, and it was a bit silly of me to imply that. i think i meant that i wasn't sure that their relationship is so healthy. i've felt this since sugar suggested lola committing suicide with her (and i can understand where she's coming from by calling herself and lol broken, but that's not the best thing to say to your girlfriend, in the end). i may be misinterperating things, but i also believe that they don't really have a loving foundation to build off - so they end up ignoring/hurting/not feeling/ect. for the other.

i'm not really sure who would be right for lola and sugar; heck, i thinking now i might be wrong; they just need to have time to be able to reflect and work on themselves. i'm not sure how to elaborate so i'm just gonna bring up some relevant info.

for the past few years, if i were in a relationship, it would've been really unhealthy. i would've treated my partner terribly even if i loved them to bits and didn't mean too; my mental illness was really messing me up, and it would've affected how i would've treated them (i'm not saying mental illness makes you abusive. i'm saying in my own experience, though, it may've affected me into having an unhealthy relationship). i've gone through 4 therapists, 4 or more medications, and a lot of self reflection; i think i've become mindful enough of my actions to have a partner and treat them right.

they could be great girlfriends! but right now, i think they need to reflect on themselves, and slowly work on their flaws to create a healthier relationship.

and i agree. maybe from this reader perspective we've missed on all the healthy good times, so it seems that they have more unhappy times than good ones. it may be silly, but i love character analysis. i'm glad to hear i'm not the only one who questions if their relationship is good for them.

thanks for the questions, Anon2. BD

Hey, Nobody, I was wondering, do you have text transcripts for these comics anywhere? I have a friend who'd really love to read this comic, but they use a screen-reader since they're blind. Any chance they can get access somehow?
Nobody 14th Feb 2017, 4:34 AM edit delete reply
heya LB. unfortunately i don't have transcripts right now.
it seems theoretically as easy as posting the scripts to the comic along with the pages, but my scripts do not describe actions and go through a lot of small changes as i'm illustrating them.
i would like to add them to the comic eventually, but they are very time-consuming, mainly because a lot of my work hinges on the ambiguity of visual media.
this means i would have to figure out a way to translate this to text. there is a big difference between watching someone seamlessly pick another person's pocket and being told "then A gently slips their hand into B's left coat pocket and grabs their phone". one is a lot less subtle. this is also why i can't hire someone else to write a transcript for me-- i would be handing off the authorial intent to someone who didn't work on the story.
at the moment, my plan is to save it for after the comic is over and my work schedule is less burdensome. sorry, i hope the wait is worth it.

No prob, I understand. I'll let my friend know!

(And I make comics myself, so I totally understand what a pain it is!)
